Maryland is introducing new legislation tackling discrimination in schools more broadly. The law protects all students, including transgender youth.

The bill HB 649 received support on 23 March from the House of Representatives. One hundred voted for it, thirty-five against. Now the Senate must decide. A hearing took place on 1 April.

The law gives much more power to the state. The Civil Rights Commission can now take action against discriminating schools. Students and parents can sue schools if this happens.

The protection is very broad. The law bans discrimination based on skin colour, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, disability and more. This applies to all school life aspects. From admission to sport to toilets.

The law affects more than just schools. Universities and other educational institutions must also comply. A student can lodge a complaint with the superintendent or the commission. Or they can go to court.

More American states are introducing similar rules. The regulations come amid fierce debates about transgender rights in education. Supporters say students need better protection. Opponents fear schools will lose their freedom.
