Twenty-five years of same-sex marriage in the Netherlands
Same-sex marriage has existed 25 years in the Netherlands. An important moment to look back satisfied at achievements.
Same-sex marriage has existed for 25 years in the Netherlands. This is a wonderful milestone we should celebrate proudly.
In 1999, the Netherlands became the first country allowing same-sex marriage. This was truly a turning point. For many couples it meant everything.
A quarter century later you can say: it works well. The world did not end. Quite the opposite actually. Many people could formalise their happiness officially.
Of course many countries still prevent homosexuals from marrying. Some even impose punishments. The Netherlands stands as progressive against this. That deserves recognition.
This anniversary is reason to reflect on our achievements. And also to pay attention to remaining work. Not everything happens automatically.
But first: a moment to celebrate this festive fact. The Netherlands made history. And many couples finally formalised their love officially.
