Hampshire College in Massachusetts was very LGBTQ+-friendly. Leaders announced Thursday the small liberal arts college must close. Financial problems could not be solved anymore.
The school was known for inclusive policies for LGBTQ+ students. It had a Queer Community Alliance Centre. It offered transfers for students leaving other colleges. Hampshire organised conferences promoting greater tolerance. But student numbers fell below 750 this year. Income was insufficient for many years.
Last year, state leaders in Florida made opposite policies. Some colleges removed rainbow flags and became less welcoming. Hampshire tried to stop that trend by offering more support. Unfortunately, money did not follow. The college closes with its progressive mission.
